As a student enters a college immediately
after a school life, his academic career takes a vast turn and an enormous
growth. College life is associated with many stressful times and depression is
very common among students. Depression is a state of feeling sad and
hopelessness and can affect many individuals. The World Health Organization
reports about 121 million people getting affected by depression, but it should
be remembered that its not a feeling that you cannot overcome.
The reasons for depression in a college
student can be many ranging from silly to major events in their life. During
the college years a student is passing through their late teens or early
twenties a period which is very crucial and can easily overwhelm any
individual. Depression in such individuals can be due to any chemical
imbalance, problems in family, reason can also be genetic, a history of abuse,
any traumas, the death of a loved one or can be the very common problem like
the general population. Some other reasons can be like:
- Financial
problems.
- Career
related worries after the college life.
- Homesickness
- Poor
dieting.
- Involvement
in any love affair or sexual event that is the major factor.
- The
pressure creating stress in balancing between the classes, work and other
social life.
- Addiction
to any drug or alcohol habit.
- Sexual
assault of any individual.

Remember depression now a day is a common problem and
you are not the exceptional to deal with it. There are several individuals of
the same group who are facing the situation more courageously. If there is any
depression you “seek help”. Yes immediately approach the college counseling
centre that is affiliated by the staff to help such students. Doing any harm to
yourself won’t prove anything apart from displaying your cowardice. If at times
you are thinking of any suicidal attempt take help either of the counselor in
the campus or contact them at hot line or call emergency services or also you
can get in touch hall assistant if you are in a dorm.
