Freshman Year College Students
After the completion of the school, every student’s
life takes a turn where they are expected to behave maturely. They are getting
prepared to deal with all kinds of situations in life as they enter a College for
higher education. But it is not always so easy for the students to cope with
unfamiliar environment. As their parents drive away, leaving them in the company
of other students, they start to feel overwhelmed and homesick. Here are some
ways to overcome the feeling of homesickness:
Accept
your feeling of homesickness: many a time student pretend to be mature but
are not and so they hesitate to accept that they are missing home environment
and think it to be as an immature behavior. But accept your feeling and give
some time to yourself as it is a major life change and try to adjust.
Get
involved: It better to face the situation then to continue repenting. Surrender your self
to situation and try to get involved in the activities going around you like
the freshman orientation activities. Try to get involved in class activities
and attend the meetings.
Make
friends: college campuses can seem to be very lonely if you don’t have any company. So
look around and you soon can find the right person sharing a true bond with
you.
Communicate
with your roommate and Residence assistance: Get in to good terms with your room
mates and try to be good to them and you will never miss your home. You can
also get in touch with the student in charge who is responsible to help
students get adjusted, may be he is able to calm you off.
Approach
a counselor: If your homesickness is taking the form of depression and interrupting your
activities go to the counselor provided by mental health facilities on your campus.
They are appointed to deal with such students and also can co-operate you.
Avoid
rash decisions: Any decision taken in a hurry in a state of depression is never healthy but
very unwise. So avoid taking any big decision under fluctuated mood like decision
to end a relationship, transfer of school etc.
Also give adequate time at least wait for a
semester before deciding anything major as this is the time required for one to
get adjusted.
